Environment & Sustainability

In MGM Partnership we have been fostering our knowledge and database in relation to sustainable construction over the past number of years.

Whilst president of the SCSI our Managing Director, Micheál Mahon, launched the “Surveyors Declare” initiative, an endeavour to acknowledge the climate crisis and to encourage participants in our industry to “up our game” with regards to sustainable construction in particular.

MGM Partnership was one of the first Quantity Surveying Practices to sign up to this initiative.

Construction accounts for 40% of CO2 emission in this country and we are of the view it behoves all participants in the industry to endeavour to reduce this.

We have been fortunate to have been involved in some leading examples of sustainable developments in the Residential and Commercial construction.

We have outlined in two case studies by way of illustration of the involvement and expertise we have had to leading edge sustainable construction.

The first project, is a hotel project which has won numerous “Sustainability” awards since completion late in 2021, The Wren, Urban Nest Hotel in Dublin 2.  The hotel was completed on a very tight, inner city site.

The following outline just some of the referenced information pertaining to the end product and highly successful “nett zero” resultant hotel.
However what these pages do not outline is the detailed calculations and studies that were undertaken in advance of selection of all the final technical solution.

MGM Partnership were central to these studies in conjunction with our Design Team colleagues in particular BDP Services division in advising our mutual clients as to the calculations and Life Cycle costings associated with the ultimate solutions.

This intensive exercise has informed us in MGM Partnership as to the requirements to make a real difference in the delivery of a genuinely “Green” building and the associated environmental benefits.

CASE STUDY 2: – ANNESLEY GARDENS, DUBLIN 6
Our other “Sustainability” case study which we have chosen to articulate our experience in the field is the award winning Annesley Park development which recently won the RIAI Public Choice Award 2022 for residential developments.

Sustainability was one of the criteria utilised in assessing the candidates for this award.
The project is a high quality development of 20 houses in Dublin 6.

All units on this development achieved an A2 rating.

Again, similar to the Wren Urban Nest, MGM partnership were centrally involved working through all options to achieve A2 rating with our Design team colleagues in particular architects, Metropolitan Workshop, and M&E consultants, Dynamic Design Consultants.

We coordinated a large number of cost exercises with particular emphasis on:
• envelope and fabric of the buildings
• Window & door specifications
• heat pumps and
• Mechanical ventilation and electrical installations

The resultant scheme has been submitted for numerous Architectural and International awards and is one we are proud to have been involved in and have learned valuable knowledge of design for incorporation into our residential outputs.
